Swave Photonics Secures .27 Million in Series A Funding to Revolutionize AI-Powered AR Smartglasses

Swave Photonics, a leading holographic display company based in Leuven, Belgium, has secured $28.27 million (€27M) in a Series A funding round. This investment will propel the company’s Holographic eXtended Reality (HXR) platform, which is set to transform the augmented reality (AR) industry by delivering AI-powered smartglasses and heads-up displays. The company is set to showcase its groundbreaking technology at CES 2025.

The funding round was co-led by Imec.xpand and SFPIM Relaunch, with participation from several new investors, including EIC Fund, IAG Capital Partners, and Murata Electronics North America. Existing backers such as Qbic Fund, PMV, Imec, and Luminate also contributed to the round.

Mike Noonen, CEO of Swave, expressed excitement about the potential of this new round, noting, “This funding will accelerate our product introductions and help us address the challenges faced by today’s AR experiences. We are excited about the support from both our new and returning investors, who understand the value of integrating semiconductor, holographic, and AI technologies.”

Swave’s technology, which has been in development for over a decade, is built on the concept of “the world’s smallest pixel.” This allows the company to create high-quality 3D holographic images that interact with users’ surroundings in real time, offering a seamless, reality-first experience. By utilizing Swave’s patented DynamicDepth technology, the images are processed naturally by the human vision system, eliminating many common problems in current AR devices.

Swave’s HXR platform also overcomes the limitations of traditional AR devices, such as high cost, large size, and poor comfort. The technology eliminates the need for expensive components like waveguides or varifocal lenses, which are required by existing AR systems. Additionally, Swave’s approach addresses issues like Vergence-Accommodation Conflict, which can cause discomfort for users.

“Swave is uniquely positioned to power the future of AI-driven spatial computing and AR,” said Theo Marescaux, Chief Product Officer at Swave. “We are designing each element of our solution, from holographic SLMs to light engines, to deliver an integrated and advanced AR experience.”

With the $28.27 million raised in this round, Swave plans to accelerate its product development, moving from prototype designs to the production of development kits and commercial devices. The company continues to build on its strong foundation, with 60 core technology patents to date, and recently made headlines with the world’s first true-color holographic display.

Swave’s innovative HXR platform will be featured at CES 2025, where it will also be recognized with a CES Innovation Award, highlighting the company’s leadership in the next generation of holographic displays.
